Research & Extension Assistant Professor of Biological and Agricultural Engineering.

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering is seeking a research and extension professor qualified as Assistant Professor. The position is a 12-month appointment, tenure track, 80% research, 20% Extension appointment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Scholarship: Develop a research program in the area of irrigation water and irrigation system management for application of both freshwater and waste-water including the effects of treated animal waste streams on water quality. This program will include the land application of animal and food processing wastes via irrigation and may include the application of municipal and industrial wastes. Research may include on-farm irrigation system management to maintain soil and water quality, micro-application of fertilizers, animal and food by-product utilization, distribution of animal and food wastes over long distances, assessing agronomic and environmental benefits of precision agricultural water management practices and prototype irrigation equipment and systems, including high-efficiency systems. The research program should attract external funding sufficient to sustain itself and allow publication of two to three peer-reviewed publications per year. The program should also provide support for graduate research assistants.

Extension: Provide technical support in sprinkler irrigation management and sprinkler application of agricultural and food waste streams through preparing and disseminating educational materials, developing presentations, and participation in demonstration projects. Support extension educators with delivery of presentations at workshops throughout the state that relate to the above areas of scholarship.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering, Biological Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, Civil Engineering or related engineering field
Demonstrated background, experience and/or aptitude in design and operation of modern irrigation systems
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Experience and/or ability to work cooperatively with other faculty and agency personnel and clientele groups.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated ability to develop a self-sustaining externally funded research program
Experience in presentation of research results at technical meetings and before agency personnel and producer groups
Background and/or experience in soil physics
Background in organic chemistry, soil chemistry and agronomy
Experience in water, soil and soil solute sampling and water quality analysis
Experience in and familiarity with US agricultural production systems
Background in hydrology and water resources systems and meteorological data collection and water requirements (evapotranspiration) estimation
Demonstrated skills in data analysis and computer modeling
Experience, ability and desire to advise graduate students
Desire and demonstrated ability to supervise and manage technicians, part-time help or post-docs
Experience and/or training in waste-water collection and land application and in waste management
